We Love This Game
Now known as: Placerville Prospectors Senior Softball Club
THE BEGINNING: Senior slow-pitch softball started in Placerville during the late months of 1980. Bob Redmond, a retired Naval Officer, and Emma Bass, El Dorado County Support Services Coordinator for Senior Citizens and Al Porter were the original organizers. When play began, John Carrion was the first coach for the eighteen pioneer players who showed up that first year. Weekly practices were held but there was no competition available for play. Al Porter became coach/manager in April of 1981. The first real competition was with the Sacramento Oldies at Grant Park (21st and C Street) in Sacramento. The first game was during a howling wind storm but the "rookies" from Placerville prevailed by a score of 24 to 22. Local teams from Placerville, both men and women teams, were challenged by the Seniors. The Seniors went on to a 11 and 11 record that first full season. Throughout the years Placerville Senior Softball grew and grew.
TODAY'S PROSPECTORS: We have over 70 active players, men (55 years and older) & women (50 years and older), comprising 5 teams that play a double header every Tuesday morning at Lion's Park in Placerville on Cedar Ravine Road. We have Club members from all around the area. Our season runs from April to the middle of September. At season's end we have a BBQ for all Club members following our Playoffs. The Club considers this more of a recreation type of league that is open for whoever wishes to participate.
We have many members that play on all levels of Senior softball teams and travel to tournaments all over the United States.
Today, as in the past, we strive to live up to our Club Preamble:
It is the purpose of our membership to enjoy the pleasure of playing softball in our golden years.
Winning shall be secondary to the enjoyment of the game.
It is our desire to promote friendship among our fellow players.
